    High output alternators are an important part of your system for battery care, but they are definitely not the only part.  Without proper voltage regulation, battery charging can be a slow process, or even worse, an ideal recipe for early battery failure. All commercial alternators come with an internal rectifier/regulator circuit that:

    1. Converts AC current generated by the alternator to DC current, and
    2. Fixes the voltage output to a static level – typically 14.6 volts. 

    There are several deficiencies with internal regulators:

    1. Not all battery technologies want to receive 14.6 volts.
    2. All battery types have an optimal charging “profile”, which means they want different voltages and currents at different stages of their charging cycle, as well as variations when battery temperatures change.
    3. Once fully charged, batteries can overheat if they are supplied with continuous current at a fixed charge voltage. 

    The Balmar Max Charge MC-624 is the latest generation of smart, multi-stage Balmar Max Charge voltage regulators. Designed to provide precise voltage control for Balmar high-output 24-volt alternators and other externally regulated P-type alternators, the MC-624 features user selectable programs for the following battery types: Deep cycle flooded, standard flooded, gel, AGM, spiral wound AGM, and LiFePO4 batteries. In addition, the regulator features a universal default program that’s safe for most battery types, as well as a program that’s designed for use in vessels utilizing voltage sensitive halogen equipment. In addition to the user selectable preset programs, the MC-624 features a wealth of advanced programming modes which make it possible to tailor charging to a wide variety of environments. When used in conjunction with optional MC-TS-A and MC-TS-B alternator and battery temperature sensors, the MC-624 features the ability to monitor and respond to a range of ambient temperature conditions, including reduction or discontinuation of charging voltages, should a catastrophic over-temperature condition occur at the alternator or the batteries
